Vittra International Schools in Sweden
Vittra runs 30 schools in Sweden that threw out the "old-school" thinking of straight desks in a line in a four-walled classroom. The schools are non-traditional in every sense: there are no letter grades and learners learn in groups at their level, not necessarily by age. Read more...

The Reggio Emilia approach is not a formal model with defined methods (such as Waldorf and Montessori), teacher certification standards and accreditation processes. But rather, the educators in Reggio Emilia speak of their evolving "experience" and see themselves as a provocation and reference point, a way of engaging in dialogue starting from a strong and rich vision of the child. In all of these settings, documentation was explored as a means of promoting parent and teacher understanding of children’s learning and development. The learning environment is the Third Educator with teachers and parents observing learning and documenting the process.   Read more...

In 1984, Ted Sizer founded the Coalition of Essential Schools (CES) to bring together examples of the radical school restructuring that was the focus of Horace’s Compromise, his work about the state of American high schools. CES practice includes small, personalized learning communities where teachers and learners know each other well in a climate of trust, decency and high expectations for all. Essential schools work to create academic success for every learner by sharing decision-making and helping all learners use their minds well through standards-aligned interdisciplinary studies, community-based "real-world" learning and performance-based assessment.  Read more...

Wildlands School has taken a stance and said, learners are at the top of the list. When it comes to personalized learning, Wildlands emphasizes personal relationships with individual learners. They learned it is more important to provide opportunities for learners to be heard, be involved, be connected, find relevance, and play an important role in the school, than to tell them what some far away committee thinks they need to know. Honest conversations build relationships. Quality relationships build supportive and open learning environments where learners feel valued, connected, and are willing to take part. Read more...

The mission of Envision Education, our particular answer to the question of purpose, is to prepare all learners, especially those whose parents did not go to college, to succeed in college, career, and life. For each learner, this is a transformational—and above all personal—endeavor. Designing effective personalized learning must start with thoughtful answers to these big-picture, purpose-driven, goal-oriented questions. Although there are different ways to answer these questions legitimately, there are kinds of answers that we should not accept. Read more...
